WELCOME TO ALGEBRA 1! (Sent via email)
Dear Algebra 1 Parents and Students,
I would like to introduce myself and welcome you to Algebra 1 for the 2023-2024 school year. As a returning tutor here at PEP, I continue to feel honored to be part of this wonderful homeschool program and look forward to meeting each student and his/her parents. As a mother of six children, I understand that partnering with parents in training their children to love the Lord their God with all their heart, soul, mind and strength is a high calling, and certainly one that we at PEP do not take lightly. I am excited about the opportunity to participate in encouraging each student to grow into a deeper relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, the Author of all wisdom and the Source of all knowledge and understanding.
In James Nickel’s article, “Why learn math?” he poses the question, “Why do we have to learn math?” He then proceeds to answer profoundly: “We learn math in order to catch a glimpse of God’s creational speech. As we learn mathematics, we are one step away from discerning the patterned order of creation. As we learn this patterned order, then we are one step away from encountering the Living God.” In other words, math reveals the glory of God in our ordered universe and is, therefore, worthy of the mental discipline and rigor that it requires.
Because our class time is limited to two hours per week, we must work together to complete this course of study effectively. The daily assignments will typically consist of 20-30 problems that will cover the material adequately. Parents will be asked to check the homework using the solutions manual, and then the student will be required to make corrections to the homework in order to receive credit for it. We must identify and rectify chronic errors or gaps in understanding quickly, or the problems will multiply. I will reserve time to review and address problems at the beginning of each class but will need the bulk of our time together for presenting new material. Each student should come to class prepared with questions that are the result of diligent study of previous lessons. Hopefully, this will provide the optimal opportunity for mastery, given our necessary constraints.
Please read the syllabus which contains information about what to bring on the first day of class. Students will need to print a copy of the syllabus and then sign their names on the last page indicating their willingness to abide by the class requirements. You will also want to print a copy of the Pacing Guide, located under the Assignments tab, so that you can see our roadmap for our course. It may be necessary to make some adjustments along the way, but I will be sure to update you regarding any changes that are made. Throughout the year you may find all assignments, course information, and other additional resources here on weebly.
Please know that I value your communication as a parent and hope that you will feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns that you may have. I can be reached by phone at (904) 962-2844 or by email at dfholland58@gmail.com.
Again, thank you for entrusting me with the privilege of teaching your student. I am looking forward to the school year and anticipate much joy and growth ahead!
In Christ,
Dabney Holland
